How to Make Sure Organizations Thrive — Identity is the Energy

At the Identity Dynamics Institute, we believe that the identity of an organization is the source of the value-creating energy that flows through it. That identity is built upon an organization’s innate capacities: the things you can do that are unique to your company. The work of designing, building and growing organizations is, in essence, the process of maximizing the flow of that energy.

We have identified the 13 critical areas — potential gaps —  that need to be monitored in order for energy to flow unimpeded. Some of those gaps are fairly simple to monitor, such as whether our internal and external communications consistently reflect who we are. Other gaps can be more subtle, such as the need to not only find and onboard talent so it is aligned with the organization’s identity, but to continue to reinforce that alignment throughout a person’s career with the company.

We believe the measure of success for an organization is whether it can build and sustain three flows of wealth, all of which are influenced by identity: economic, reputational, and institutional.

Economic Wealth:  Revenue and income growth, margin improvement, and increasing shareholder returns, resulting in financial strength over the long term — not just quarterly results.

Reputational Wealth: Strong brands, broad stakeholder trust and loyalty, (including people’s willingness to suspend disbelief and give the company the benefit of the doubt when necessary), and an overall positive image.

Institutional Wealth: High-value intellectual property, organizational wisdom developed and shared over time, ongoing talent development, and cultural cohesion. With identity-based management, the organization thrives on its ability to learn from the marketplace.

The Institute is devoted to continuously refining our knowledge of how to maximize organizational energy, in the name of value creation, and to providing powerful solutions that the world’s leading business consultants can bring to their clients.

Are All Organizations Destined to Die?

Abraham Maslow asserted that there was a highest level of human thriving, a state Maslow termed ‘self-actualized.’

This paper suggests that there is a state of self-actualization for organizations as well. Two decades ago, Larry Ackerman introduced his discovery of the Laws of Identity, which gave individuals and organizations a granular-enough understanding of the nature of human and organizational potential to be able to follow their own paths to Maslow’s ideal state.

Now Ackerman’s vision has been significantly expanded, offering a clearer understanding of the leadership approach Boards and C-suite executives will need to adopt for their organizations to be able to reach their highest levels of success over long periods of time, if not forever.

Who Needs to Understand Identity-Based Management?

No Organization Can Be Either Swift or Resilient Without Alignment Around Identity

Identity-based management is one of those concepts that, once someone understands it, they’re likely to say something like, “It’s so obvious.” So who needs to be constantly aware of the requirements of identity-based management?

  • The CEO. You cannot build or patch around a CEO who doesn’t get it
  • The Board of Directors. If they are to be the continuity of the organization, they need to know what the keel is
  • Everyone who communicates for the organization, internally or externally, must have a deep understanding of the organization’s identity
