How to Make Sure Organizations Thrive — Identity is the Energy

At the Identity Dynamics Institute, we believe that the identity of an organization is the source of the value-creating energy that flows through it. That identity is built upon an organization’s innate capacities: the things you can do that are unique to your company. The work of designing, building and growing organizations is, in essence, the process of maximizing the flow of that energy.

We have identified the 13 critical areas — potential gaps —  that need to be monitored in order for energy to flow unimpeded. Some of those gaps are fairly simple to monitor, such as whether our internal and external communications consistently reflect who we are. Other gaps can be more subtle, such as the need to not only find and onboard talent so it is aligned with the organization’s identity, but to continue to reinforce that alignment throughout a person’s career with the company.

We believe the measure of success for an organization is whether it can build and sustain three flows of wealth, all of which are influenced by identity: economic, reputational, and institutional.

Economic Wealth:  Revenue and income growth, margin improvement, and increasing shareholder returns, resulting in financial strength over the long term — not just quarterly results.

Reputational Wealth: Strong brands, broad stakeholder trust and loyalty, (including people’s willingness to suspend disbelief and give the company the benefit of the doubt when necessary), and an overall positive image.

Institutional Wealth: High-value intellectual property, organizational wisdom developed and shared over time, ongoing talent development, and cultural cohesion. With identity-based management, the organization thrives on its ability to learn from the marketplace.
